Mask Expectations at the Y

New Mask Expectations at the Y

Dear YMCA Members,
Governor Inslee announced on May 13, that Washington State will fully adopt the latest CDC guidelines regarding masks. The new guidance allows people who are fully vaccinated the option to no longer wear a mask indoors. Fully vaccinated is defined as being two weeks removed from a second shot of Moderna or Pfizer or a single shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

As you are aware, the Y serves a large community of kids, young staff, and members who may be immunocompromised. Because all of these populations are served under the same roof, we will take the following steps at all South Sound YMCA facilities in an effort to provide a safe place for all.

Effective Wednesday, May 19:

  • Masks will be required in all common areas regardless of vaccination status – this includes lobbies, hallways, pool decks, and locker rooms.
  • In kid-focused areas masks will be required at all times – this includes Kids Zone!, Climbing Wall, and the Adventure Zone.
  • In exercise areas – classes and equipment will continue to be set-up in a way to encourage social distancing. Those who are fully vaccinated may remove their masks in these spaces.
  • Staff will continue to wear masks at all times while on duty.
  • Staff will continue to clean and sanitize frequently using products and tools proven to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The Y remains committed to creating a safe environment for everyone. We ask members to remain diligent in cleaning and sanitizing equipment before and after each use. We also ask staff and members to continue to practice social distancing when possible. We are optimistic these guidelines will be temporary as more people in our community become vaccinated, especially youth. For more information on where you can get a vaccine, please visit: Washington State Department of Health.
We appreciate your patience as we navigate the best way to implement these recommendations safely, effectively and respectfully.
